ANTHONY’S STORY

Anthony truly had it – the gift to love unconditionally and to understand what was important in life.  His mom, family and friends saw it in his smile, felt it in his hugs and his effortless way of making them each feel like he was always there for them.

Anthony was born August 30, 1990 and was a typical boy who loved soccer, swimming, video games, reading, Power Rangers, Batman and playing with his friends.  At the age of 10, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and his life was forever changed.  He chose to become a young champion for research for type 1 diabetes helping to raise more than $100,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation where he was also a Youth Ambassador to help other young children understand the benefits of their work.

Anthony excelled in academics, basketball and music. He lettered in varsity basketball during his junior and senior years, was inducted in the school’s Music Hall of Fame and was a recipient of the Leadership Award.

He attended Elon University, Columbus State Community College, and, at the time of his death was enrolled at Ohio State University.  He excelled in business at an early age, successfully completing a competitive restaurant management program, and his warm smile and commitment to professionalism made him a favorite among customers and employees.

Anthony was baptized in his youth and was a devoted member of Saint Philip Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir and supported their mission.

Anthony passed away at the age of 22 on June 4, 2013 from complications of type 1 diabetes.  After his death, his family learned of his decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. Though they never talked about his decision, they were not surprised because of how Anthony lived his life, sharing his gifts with others.

Anthony saved 4 lives, including an extra special designated donation of his kidney to a family friend who had been on dialysis for three years.

Anthony saved lives and made a lasting difference in the world through his generous decision to be a donor. His hero’s legacy lives on in those he saved and those who were touched by his example, his beautiful spirit and his many gifts.
