JEFF’S STORY

Jeff Walburn is a quiet, unassuming, hard-working family man. In 2007 Jeff underwent a common surgery for his gallbladder, only to learn the very next day that he was in liver failure.  Three months later, his doctor informed him that his health was rapidly declining, and he needed to be placed on the national transplant waiting list. His illness came as a shock to Jeff and his family.  However, a close friend reminded Jeff that a special angel who made the courageous decision and said yes to donation, would be there for him when it was his turn to receive the organ he desperately needed.

As Jeff’s health deteriorated, he struggled to do everyday tasks but tried to spare his family from knowing how bad he really felt.  His children would make sure he laughed and his wife helped him stay focused and engaged in family activities. After 10 months on the waiting list, Jeff received his gift of life in February 2008.

Now Jeff honors his donor, John, by volunteering with LifeGift and Donate Life Texas and is a mentor to fellow liver recipients.  He is beyond grateful that he has seen both of his children graduate high school and college, watched his son play college baseball and had the privilege of walking his daughter down the aisle.

For Jeff, meeting his donor family was an incredible experience. His whole family has now met them and they are very close.  Jeff stays in good physical condition and completed his first sprint Triathlon in 2012.  By 2016, he had done several long distance run and bike events.  This year he completed his second ½ Ironman Triathlon (70.3 miles) and he recently completed his first full Ironman competition. He dedicates every event to “Second Chance Johnny”, his family’s affectionate name for his donor, John, and to all those who are still waiting for their gift of life.
