LORENZO’S STORY
Lorenzo Luarca Beronilla is not only celebrated as a fan-favorite chef on the Epicurious series "4 Levels," but also recognized as a talented actor and proud heart transplant recipient. His journey has not only redefined his own life but also that of his loved ones.
Lorenzo's passions for cooking, performing, and connecting with people were suddenly interrupted by unexplained breathlessness, the first sign of heart failure. Originally from Pennsylvania and now calling Saugerties, in New York's Hudson Valley, home, he faced a life-altering diagnosis: his heart was functioning at just 16% capacity. He had to summon deep resilience, humor, and hope to face this new reality. He was admitted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, where a team of specialists stabilized his condition and placed him on the transplant list.
Sixteen days later, on Good Friday, he received a life-saving donor heart, a gift that changed his world forever. Throughout recovery, Lorenzo's family became his unwavering foundation. The ordeal tested them in ways they never imagined, bringing fear, uncertainty, and a new level of vulnerability into their daily life. The experience deepened family bonds, creating profound gratitude for every shared moment. Their quick rallying, steadfast support, and emotional strength turned anxiety into resilience. Witnessing his recovery inspired them to cherish time together and embrace life's smaller joys.
His openness about the journey has sparked conversations not only about organ donation but also about the strength of familial love in the face of adversity. His story moved his family to become advocates themselves, raising awareness and encouraging compassion within their communities. Today, Lorenzo leads a vibrant creative life, shooting commercials, starring in viral cooking segments, filming independent films, and savoring peaceful mornings over coffee. His passions remain: exploring global flavors, mentoring young chefs and actors, and sharing joy through storytelling. Each heartbeat is a reminder of the extraordinary gift he received. He now honors his donor's legacy by advocating for organ, eye, and tissue donation. He lives with intention, gratitude, and compassion. For Lorenzo, life after transplant isn't merely survival; it's about savoring every moment with love, purpose, and the soul of a storyteller, paying it forward.
