FREDERICK’S STORY

As a family, we have always been acutely aware of how precious time is and how powerful being present is. When Frederick's sister, Miceale was diagnosed, it knocked us off our axis. Donation from time to time would come up in our discussions as we have hearts for service but felt conviction towards the Navajo traditions as well. Miceale would not accept her brother's kidney because of his future plans to enlist. There were trying times on dialysis, lack of matches, lack of support and silence from family. When a deceased donor came through for his sister, Frederick signed up to be an organ donor. If he could not donate as a living donor, then he would help anyone he could at the end of his time.

Frederick lavished his time outdoors on his longboard crisscrossing all over Albuquerque and hiking. He loved Star Wars and took Yoda's sayings as mantras. He not only believed in UFOs but had the chance to witness one. He only took his coffee with fresh ground beans, black with half a spoon of coconut oil. Frederick found the ability to "travel in the invisible way" and honor God by committing his time to our elderly neighbors, the homeless, and church. Born with fire in his soul and grace in his heart, he was raised on the scout values and achieved Eagle Scout.

At twenty-seven years old, Frederick was in a single-person car accident, suffering irreversible head trauma. Upon departing from Frederick's physical body, we prayed and spoke over his body and organs thanking them for serving him in this physical world with a wish they would serve the next person. Both kidneys went to two Albuquerque residents, his liver went to a man in Utah, his heart to another Utah man, and his pancreas was donated for research. Frederick's corneas went to the New Mexico Lions Eye Bank to help restore sight. It was wonderful to hear from two of Frederick's recipients and see a part of Frederick's personality and habits imparted on them. New Mexico Donor Services enveloped us with kindness and inclusivity. They gave us the opportunity to advocate for other natives at public events and exposed us to the Transplant Games of America, which was a healing and illuminating experience.
