Philip John “P.J.” Wolf was a blond-haired, blue-eyed, handsome 8½ year old in search of a basketball game. More than 25 years ago, he jumped on his bike and set off into the neighborhood to recruit players for a neighborhood basketball game. His parents saw him next in the back of an EMS. Months prior, he had asked his mom if he could donate his kidney, stating, “I just need one, Mom.” From this conversation, in their darkest of moments, P.J.’s parents did not question their decision, but rather they took comfort in knowing that if they couldn’t save their child, at least they were able to save someone else’s.

P.J.’s Story

Philip John Wolf was a blond-haired, blue-eyed, handsome 8½ year old. He shared his name with his father and grandfather, but was known simply as P.J. He was kind, smart, funny and mischievous. He dreamt of becoming a paleontologist, he buried his sisters’ dolls in the sandbox and he loved to play basketball with his friends.

More than 25 years ago, he jumped on his bike and set off into the neighborhood to recruit players for a neighborhood basketball game. His parents saw him next in the back of an EMS. When his parents were told that their son would not survive his injury, they knew what P.J. would want to do. He had told them. Months prior, the Wolf family watched a news report about a young girl in need of a transplant, which sparked a conversation about organ donation. P.J., the youngest, did not need much time to think about whether or not he wanted to be a donor. He asked his mom right away if he could donate his kidney, stating, “I just need one, Mom.”
Because of this conversation, in their darkest of moments, P.J.’s parents did not question their decision, but rather they took comfort in knowing that if they couldn’t save their child, at least they were able to save someone else’s.
