David’s Story

David Fox built his life around helping others.  As a man committed to service, David started his mission serving the country in the United States Marine Corps before finding his calling as a firefighter. Throughout his adult life, he touched many through his service to the community, and he fought bravely and selflessly alongside his fellow firefighters.  He spent over 20 years placing the safety of others first while working as an EMT and a volunteer firefighter, which is where he found his niche.  David served as the Assistant Fire Chief of the Bastrop County Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Services District 1, and was also a member of the Volunteer Fire Service Honor Guard.  During his tenure, he was honored with two Medals of Valor for his life-saving actions in the line of duty.  In October of 2012, David was humbled to honor the lives of his fallen comrades at the National Fire Academy’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony in Emmitsburg, MD.  Beyond these recognitions, he was thankful in his day-to-day activities, being able to train, mentor, and work alongside his colleagues.   David ensured he led by example, thanking those around him for their service, and allowing his passion for the fire service to inspire others of all ages.

David passed away suddenly at the age of 48 after suffering a heart attack in February 2013.  Even in death, his life-saving legacy lives on through his powerful gift of tissue donation which served as his last act of kindness to others.  Through his gift of donation, David has touched the lives of over 80 recipients in 22 states.  David’s family and community are proud to know that he continues to serve others, and he will always be remembered as having a heart as big as Texas.
