MANOHAR’S STORY

Manohar "Mike" Lilaram Vaswani was born on May 2, 1944, in Hyderabad, Sindh, India. Mike and his wife Rita immigrated to the US in 1971 and they were married for 52 years. Mike and Rita first lived in California where they raised their son and daughter and where he was a strong community leader in the Sindhi community. They later relocated to Las Vegas, where Mike founded the Asian American Group (AAG). Mike was a businessman whose purpose in life was helping others. His strong faith and love for his family prompted him to help his siblings immigrate to the US. Mike was passionate about helping others and he was always the last person to leave an event or party, because he was helping clean up. He didn't need to be asked because when he saw a need, he just fulfilled it. Mike was committed to helping the underserved community and he led others in many community service projects over the years. Each year, Mike and his team donated thousands of turkeys and toys to elementary students in North Las Vegas during the holidays. He always happily gave money to those in need. When asked why, Mike said that the recipients would always say, "God bless you," and he was always looking for ways to bring God's blessings to others. Mike was also a political activist and supported candidates that aligned with AAG's mission to preserve Asian culture and make Las Vegas a more inclusive community. He enjoyed having a drink or two with his friends and talking about politics into the late hours of the night. After a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, Mike died peacefully at home on July 31, 2022, with his family by his side. His final wish was fulfilled when his organs were donated to the Nevada Donor Network and his brain tissue given for Alzheimer's research. His legacy of altruism lives on in his family and friends.
