Richard and Julie Glover have always been giving people. In 2009, they went on vacation to visit Julie's friend Stacy and her husband Bill, who had been suffering from kidney disease. Richard was struck by the severity of his illness. In early 2010, Bill was rushed to the hospital and was not expected to make it through the night. Richard prayed for him, and when Bill survived, Richard decided to donate his kidney to Bill. The transplant occurred on July 14, 2010. Richard found later that their journey "has touched his family, friends, and community, as well as blessing me by sharing the story of my living donor journey to thousands of people as a OneLegacy Ambassador."

Richard's Story

Richard and Julie Glover have always been giving people. In 2004, they found their dream home and prayed to be able to receive it. In exchange, they would give away all the avocados on their huge tree. To date, they have given away 6,000 avocados.

In 2009, Richard and Julie went on vacation to West Virginia to visit Julie's friend Stacy. Her husband, Bill, had been suffering from kidney disease for five years. Upon seeing him, Richard was struck by the severity of his illness. In early 2010, Julie received a call from Stacy late one night; Bill had been rushed to the hospital and was not expected to make it through the night.

"As I lay in bed that night I prayed for Bill that if he were to make it through the night I would try to help him, knowing that my blood type is O+ and I could donate to anyone," said Richard. Julie called it his "avocado promise." Bill survived, and Richard realized that the only thing that would help him was a kidney transplant.

"Talking it over with Julie, I came to the decision to offer one of my kidneys to Bill. After finding out that Bill's blood type was also O+, I knew it was God's plan."

Richard began the testing process and kept praying; he turned out to be a perfect match. Only July 14, 2010, Richard donated his kidney to his friend.

Bill is now living a healthy life, spending time with his wife, and raising their two daughters. Richard has continued to live his life as he did before the donation, including running three triathlons.

"This journey has been like throwing a pebble into a pond and watching the ripple effect," Richard explained. "It has not only just helped Bill, it has touched his family, friends, and community, as well as blessing me by sharing the story of my living donor journey to thousands of people as a OneLegacy Ambassador."
