David Charles Starr was the third of four sons of a very close family. He was an accomplished drummer, student council leader, soccer player, and yell leader. A 19-year-old engineering student at the University of Missouri, David became an organ and tissue donor after a fatal auto accident on January 26, 1991. Five years after his death, David’s mother Barb and brother Kit attended the U.S. Transplant Games, where they were greatly touched by the way the athletes were living their lives so fully. Kit decided to donate one of his kidneys if the opportunity ever arose, and it finally happened in 2003. He affirmed, “If an organ donation could have saved David, and someone gave him that chance, just think how different our lives would have been.”
