Ron's Story

Born and raised in Marshall, Minn., Ron Kerkvliet was a stand-out football player in high school. Ron joined the military and served his country with the U.S. Army in Greenland. After his tour of duty, he moved to the Twin Cities with his wife, Marilyn, and raised four children. For 31 years, Ron worked at the Ford Assembly Plant in St. Paul. He liked to work with his hands and had a knack for being able to fix anything.

Ron's grandchildren were extremely special to him. He enjoyed attending their school and sporting events. Sometimes he expressed his adamant opinion to the referee, to the chagrin of the spectators nearby, especially Marilyn.

Ron took special pleasure in spending time with his family and friends. He loved to talk and never missed an opportunity when he had an audience.

Ron's donation story began October 28, 2006, when his beloved 16-year-old granddaughter Deanna was tragically killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Deanna had often spoken of being a donor, and her generous gift of donation has helped 67 people so far.

Deanna was honored in the 2011 Rose Parade as her mother Catherine, Ron's daughter, rode the Donate Life float in her memory.

Following Deanna's death, Ron spoke frequently to groups about the dangers of drunk driving and Deanna's gift of life, which raised awareness about tissue donation. Deanna's unselfish act inspired Ron to also want to become a donor.

On July 6, 2011, Ron passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Ron was only 71 years old, one month from celebrating his and Marilyn's 50th wedding anniversary. Ron and Marilyn's children, who had spent months planning for the celebration, instead had to plan a funeral.

In accordance with Ron's wishes and following the inspiring example set by Deanna, his tissues were donated. "Despite the fact our family has suffered two devastating losses in five years, we take some comfort that our loved ones were able to pass on the gift of life through donation," said Marilyn.
