On August 3, 1992, 22-year-old Shay Ledbetter went out for a walk and was fatally struck by a car. She had just begun graduate school at the University of North Texas, where she studied sociology. Shay’s decision to be an organ donor benefited several people, including 22-year old Bonnie Lundy, who was dying from a heart infection.

In 1998, Bonnie met the Ledbetter family, and they became close friends. Bonnie now serves as executive director of Transplants for Children in San Antonio. On August 9, 2008, her 16th “heart anniversary,” Bonnie married and invited Shay’s parents to be a part of her wedding.
