Jake Burke could always be found wearing flip flops and carrying his lacrosse stick. When he first received his learner’s permit, he approached his father, John, with questions about organ donation. John didn’t think much of it, and after a brief conversation, Jake made up his mind to designate himself as a donor on his driver’s license.

A few years later, 19-year-old Jake was driving home with some friends when a tragic automobile accident took his life. Upon his death, Jake’s wishes to become an organ donor were fulfilled.

Through organ donation, Jake, saved the lives of at least three people, and through tissue donation he enhanced the lives of numerous others. His father John recalled: “As I look back on the events of October 11, 2002, I am still in awe of what Jake did. When he left us, he left a part of himself that would live on forever.

“Remember, we never know when our time on earth will be up. Jake didn’t wake up that morning thinking that this was his last day to be here with his family and friends. Let everyone know that you want to give the precious gift of life to others. Life is short. Don’t be afraid to tell your parents that you love them. Hug your brothers and sisters. Tell your friends how much they mean to you. Drive a little slower, be patient, and open your heart to the endless possibilities of saving the lives of complete strangers.”
