Felipe Perez is the father of California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez.

"When my father passed away, he had his organs donated," said Pérez. "In that painful moment, I was deeply comforted knowing that my father would be able to give others a second chance at life, people that he never had the opportunity to meet. That is why I encourage everyone to sign up to be a donor.

"Organ donation is very personal to me. My mother, before her death, was on kidney dialysis for several years," said Pérez. "As I sat with her during treatments, I saw people of every age, every background and all walks of life trying to beat the clock and survive long enough to receive an organ transplant.”

Earlier this year, Speaker Pérez authored and Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 2352, a measure that extends the life of a donated organ to certain MediCal recipients by requiring the state to cover anti-rejection meds for up to two years.

“With the critical shortage of organ donors, we need to ensure that every single donor’s wishes are honored, and that every recipient of a new organ be given the opportunity to survive and thrive with their new lease on life.”
