Katherine's Story

Katherine "Katie" Belen Marsh was a beautiful, smart, kind, serious and responsible girl who lovingly and generously gave of herself to her friends and family.

School was very important to Katie. Always an "A" student at schools for the gifted and talented, she was named "Outstanding Student" in middle school.  For three years, Katie participated in Destination Imagination, an organization that strives to promote creativity in young people. She became the leader of her team.

Her father Scott recalled that Katie also loved to read. "We printed out her Accelerated Reader list and discovered that she had read almost 1,400 books," he said.  "We were stunned, but not surprised. That was our Katie."

Katie also sang beautifully, Scott noted. "She was a member of her church choir and sang faithfully every Sunday.  Although shy to sing around her friends, we know she truly had an angel's voice."

Twelve-year-old Katie passed away on June 22, 2010, from a brain aneurysm.  Katie's parents were registered organ donors and two weeks prior to her death, she had told her father that she also wanted to be a donor if anything were to happen to her. With her donation of organs, tissue, and corneas, Katie was able to help save or enhance the lives of eight people.

"To all of us, Katie was special. We feel privileged to have known and loved her," said Scott. "This has been a deep and profound loss and we miss her every day. She set an example for all of us to do our best in life."
