Nancy Marleny Keys had an intensely energetic and competitive spirit. She immigrated to the U.S. from Bogota, Colombia, at age five. Nancy never forgot her humble beginnings and throughout her life strove to improve conditions for herself and those less fortunate. On August 20, 2000, Nancy died at the age of 41 from head trauma incurred in a car accident. She had registered to be an organ donor after learning about it from the DMV. "It was this decision that we were able to honor," said her elder son, Ryan. "Knowing she continues to live on inside of each of the six recipients who received her organs, fulfilled her final and most selfless wish."

Nancy's Story

Nancy Marleny Keys believed in chasing dreams. Her social, bold, and intensely energetic and competitive spirit was the driving force behind her ability to achieve personal goals. Born in Bogota, Colombia, she immigrated to the United States at age five with her family. In her early 20's, she married her high school sweetheart.

Nancy had many passions and excelled in athletics, mainly softball, volleyball and bowling. She was also an entertainer - dancing and acting - who enjoyed the limelight. But it was her role as mother that brought her the greatest joy. Her hope was to raise her two sons, Ryan and Brent, to be healthy, responsible, and respectful, and encourage them to follow their dreams.

Nancy never forgot her humble beginnings and throughout her life strove to improve conditions for herself and those less fortunate. For many years, she sponsored a little girl from Central America through funding and letters of encouragement.

On August 20, 2000, Nancy died from head trauma incurred in a motor vehicle accident. She was 41. Nancy had registered to be an organ donor after learning about it at the DMV and was able to save six lives.

"It was this decision that we were able to honor, and that helped us through the shock and pain of losing her so suddenly," said her elder son, Ryan. "Knowing that mom had not died in vain and instead continues to live on inside of each of the six recipients who received her organs, gives us a sense of peace and joy and fulfilled her final and most selfless wish."
