Joseph's Story

Joseph Howard "Jody" Culver II had a larger than life spirit. He loved work, his church, and spending time with his friends and family. Jody always had a huge smile and was quick to tell a joke or make someone laugh.

Born on January 1, the Rose Parade had always been a huge birthday celebration for him. He and his family spent many nights sleeping on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena anxiously awaiting the parade to pass by. It was a tradition while he was alive, and in his death, a new tradition has been born.

On October 17, 2008, Jody had a fatal heart attack in his sleep at the young age of 48. The deep hurt from the sudden loss of such a great man was felt by many. He was a husband, a Dad, Pop-Pop to seven beautiful grandchildren, a son, a nephew, a cousin and a friend to so many.

Jody always knew that he would be an organ donor and even joked "you can't take it with you when you die." So when it was time for his family to make the decision, they knew what to do and honored his wish by saying "yes" to donation. More than 95 people were able to benefit from his bone, tissue, and corneas.

"The loss of my Dad has been very hard. But knowing that even in the midst of such tragedy, there is this beautiful gift that has been given. I am so proud to be the daughter of a donor and will make sure that I share his story with everyone I can," said Jody's daughter, Jennifer. "His legacy and his memory will live on through the gifts he gave through his death."

"Happy Birthday, Dad! The entire world will be watching as we celebrate your birthday and you are honored for the selfless gifts you gave. We love you Grasshopper."
